New Business Websites and Mistaken Business Owner Assumptions

“If you build it they will come…” whispered the soft but forceful voice.

“If you build it, they will come… ”

Just like in the Kevin Costner movie, Field of Dreams, I think many new business owners seem to think that as soon as they build a website, they will instantly have a flood of customers clogging up there phone lines and filling their inbox with orders.

I wish this were true. However, this is far from the truth.

I frequently have clients of mine get discouraged when they don’t get that flood of sales they mistakenly thought they were going to get in the first month after their website went “live”. I have to reassure them that any successful business takes time to build.

It takes a solid, steady, and focused effort of marketing, tracking, and tweaking before a website can produce the results you are really looking for.

If you opened a new physical store in your town, you wouldn’t expect it to be an overnight success, would you?  You would have to spend a lot of focused effort on marketing and promoting your business. You would probably have to do this for a while before really getting ahead. If you didn’t put in the effort to get the word out about your business, you wouldn’t exist to anyone (or at least not enough to matter) and you would be out of business. An online business is no different. If you don’t market and promote your website, out of business it goes…

Be prepared for the long haul when you build your website for your online business. Don’t be discouraged when you are not a millionaire the first week after your website launches. In fact, don’t be disheartened when you don’t even make your first sale in the first week. It takes effort and time. Be diligent and patient.

“If you build it (and do the proper marketing), they will come… (Just not immediately…)”
